Ryan Reynolds is teaming up with Strange World writer and co-director Qui Nguyen to make Disney’s fictional organization, the Society of Explorers and Adventures, into a live-action feature film.
Unfamiliar with the Society of Explorers and Adventures, which theme park fans loving call S.E.A.? The S.E.A. is an organization created by Disney Imagineers with a backstory that first came into being at Tokyo DisneySea, where it weaves an interconnected story between several rides at Tokyo DisneySea, including the Tower of Terror and Mystic Manor. It was grown since then and references to the S.E.A. are now in other Disney parks as well as their cruise ships.
The S.E.A.’s fictional history dates back to 1538, and its members include scientists, adventurers, and explorers from around the world who are dedicated to continuing exploration of Earth’s oceans and lands. The organization has had some unsavory members like Barnabas T. Bullion and Lord Henry Mystic who would steal artifacts around the globe for their own, evil, personal gain. It also includes members like Jock Lindsey, Indiana Jones’ pilot who set up a hangar bar in Disney Springs, Florida.
This live-action adaptation will be written by Nguyen and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “pursues alternative angles to S.E.A. mythology in present day by adding a new supernatural element to the history and following new characters not present in the original S.E.A. lore.”
Reynold’s is producing the feature through his company, Maximum Effort. This project is completely separate from the Disney+ series that is also based on the S.E.A., and is planned to establish a wider S.E.A. franchise. No news yet on whether Reynolds will also star in the movie in addition to producing, or when we’ll see the S.E.A. in live-action form on the big screen.
